6 N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 6 W ith all due respect to current U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., A.B. "Happy" Chandler was arguably the greatest political personality to come from my home state in the past century. He served as governor of the state twice over a period of 24 years, served a term in the U.S. Senate and served as commissioner of Major League Baseball from 1945 to 1951. He is widely credited with integrating baseball by allowing and, perhaps more accurately, facilitating Jackie Robin- son's entry into the game in 1947. But this column isn't about Happy Chandler. It's about his daughter. Mimi Chandler Lewis was a dear friend of mine who hired me as her deputy com- missioner for the Kentucky Department of Travel Development as a 33-year-old in 1988. I served in that capacity for two and a half years before joining forces with my business partner, Charlie Presley, to start my publishing company in 1990. Mimi left her position in government shortly thereafter and became our fi rst copy edi- tor in 1992. She and Herb Sparrow worked together beautifully in our early years to over- come typos and gaffes that are the bane of this industry. Mimi's command of the English language was beyond reproach, and she could turn a phrase like no one I've ever known. She made Herb and me laugh constantly. The last time I saw Mimi was a year ago when I took her to hear McConnell deliver a delightful narrative about her father and his political adversaries at a local university. It was a humorous look back at politics that now seems to refl ect a much more innocent age. Mimi died a few weeks ago at the age of 89. Her daughter called me to tell me how much she loved me. I loved her, too, and if you had asked either one of us how we ever became paired as soul mates of sorts, neither of us could have even begun to guess.
